Help Provide a Community Library

Project Name: Horizon Community Library
Goal: $12,000

Life in Naro Moru is a struggle.

  • 62% of the people are unemployed or underemployed.
  • 60% live on less than $1.50 a day.
  • The average life expectancy hovers around 36 years.
  • 5% - 10% of the women between 15 and 30 are HIV-AIDS positive.*

Please join Kenya Works in providing a lifeline of learning, opportunity and hope with a community library from Books for Africa. None of the schools we help in Naro Moru can adequately house books much less computers. The roofs leak. The floors are mud. None of the schools have electricity. With a community library we can open the world to over 7,000 students, plus thousands of adults, at a central location.

The people we serve treasure learning but don’t own books because books are a luxury. Naro Moru has no luxuries. It is an agricultural hub on the western side of Mount Kenya. Many children walk miles to school. Before and after school they hoe and weed and plant. They carry wood or water and care for siblings. In fact, many of our students are orphans with nothing. For them to select and read a book or finger a computer keyboard will be an incomprehensible thrill. We have two bright and sunny rooms with windows waiting for the library books and computers. Matthew the carpenter is ready to build the shelves, tables and chairs. We need your help to raise $12,000. This isn’t just a library, this is an economic ladder, and with your help we can move people up the rungs.

You can help.
